Seth’s always been tall for his age, so he got the nickname Beanstalk quite early on, and kept living up to it.

If we’re not saving Santa on the next page then I quit.

If you squint really hard, and interpret it very generously, then Gemma has already saved Santa from needing to give Anna a Christmas gift in this comic.

I like Jon's mom. She seems to have a really good instinct for the right thing to say... I wouldn't be so surefooted in her place.

And, by the way, IMHO she talks like a Mom; she doesn't sound like some unnatural stilted straw person who always says exactly what the plot needs. In some comics, all the characters have a similar shared voice. Not so, here!

Five stars, would read again.

She's a fun character to write, it's refreshing to write someone who doesn't constantly say the wrong thing for a change!

And thank you! She's partly inspired by my own mum, who's really wise, but doesn't sound like a cartoon guru or something

I have to wonder 1) whether the matter of what father George may or may not have done more than a decade ago really matters anymore, and 2) whether Seth being this unyielding and bitter about it even really had fair cause or not.

Boo. They should've called Jon, "Beanstalk," and Sesil, "Stubbs," for the comedic reversal value.

Both things I wanted people to interrogate, so I'm glad you're thinking about them!

Yeah I actually think Seth might have had a nickname like that when he was very young, because he was a very tiny baby, but it fell out of use when he was being mistaken for a 5-year-old by the age of 3

Jon's mother: "Remember that time when we had to move into a new house with a higher ceiling, because Seth kept hurting his head?"

Fun fact: some houses in the UK (and presumably other countries, particularly in Europe) were built so long ago that the door frames/ceilings are too low for some taller people! So this legit could have happened

I've had "Jon, in tears, holding teaspoons" in my script for so long, it's so gratifying to finally have it out in the world
