Workplace Schadenfreude and Tuesday sex are different, uncomparable pleasures. Each one properly appreciated in context has the potential of a totally subjective best day.

At first I thought the concept of calculating happiness was weird, but I try to write jokes, which is basically calculating happiness so

In my experience it's at least as much calculating fear as it is calculating happiness. I'm not sure if this is worth discussing in detail here though, for reasons:
"Trying to explain humour is like trying to perform live vivisection. The process of trying to take apart and analyze either kind of specimen it is likely to be informative and even interesting. Either is to be avoided in polite company unless specifically called for though, because the subject usually tends to die in the process."

Y'know, in the subjective comparison of happiness between Jon and the happy couple he might actually come out ahead. A key reason why is that schadenfreude smugness has a lot less sweat and dirty laundry to clean up afterwards associated with it than two people moving their undiscovered countries together. Perhaps it is not so though if Ken is one to return such mockery and unnecessary difficulty (which Jon could and should have warned him about) with righteous vengeance.

This is perhaps one of the nicest jokes you've ever written, the character being mocked for his lack of imagination and myopic self-absorption is still feeling pretty good about himself.

"one of the nicest jokes"
The reason it's one of my
favourites :) Everyone's being nice (albeit in a jerky way), then it ends on sex.

My magnum opus
