Gemma has no feelings about Anna like I have no feelings about people who hate musicals.

This is supposed to be RELAXING DAMN IT

That isn't how she relaxes and enjoys herself? I've known some people to react more to ranting than to, er, notable pharmaceuticals.

That shower thing might actually be fair if Anna properly cleans up afterwards, but couches are not well designed to be cleaned up after the sweating, squirting and oozing. If one does not put down the right kind of sheets first then everyone who comes near a sex couch will be forced to smell it, even if there are no visible stains. More generally, little things to one person may be just cause for murder to someone else. I have stories I could share about this.

I invite you to rant your feelings about people who like musicals, people who hate them, and people who suddenly start singing them while you're trying to complete and check a spreadsheet that needs to be done within the hour, on pain of personally losing thousands of pounds for failure.

I just think that people who hate musicals don't like metaphors, don't like music, and don't like fun, and are they the kinds of people whose opinions matter?

I hum musical numbers sometimes, but I confine the singing to within my own home or among specific musical-loving friends and family. Not everyone is ready for my rendition of All I Ask of You.

I wasn't sure how to respond to that in a way that's funny, so I asked someone else. He's a bassist I know who doesn't like musicals or opera, that I jam with on most Friday nights. "People who like musicals are all tone-deaf or sadists, and I want no part of that BDSM idea of fun." He added, "Andrew Lloyd Webber and his legacy is a hemorrhoid on the bleeding arsehole of western music," when I reminded him of the part about metaphors.

He jams better when he's annoyed, and this helped, so thank you. :)

Oof, well, if you don't like the music of a musical, there's not much else to stay for, so I get that!

I'm more of a Rodgers and Hammerstein girl, but I do love me some Phantom of the Opera... and Cats

"I am the very model of a modern..."

Gilbert and Sullivan weren't terribly adventurous musically, but I think they made a fair bit of work that could stand much more repetition in the present. My friend would disagree of course, but we've covered that sufficiently I think.

I like a little Gilbert and Sullivan too! I really like Pirates of Penzance aka a musical full of songs everyone knows but no one realises what they're from

Heh, Gemma cracks me up. She's the comic relief that she didn't know existed. :D

Regarding musicals, some of us just have particular tastes in our movie preferences that don't include the characters unrealistically bursting into accompanied song and dance. There are precious few that I actually enjoy (Man of La Mancha is the only one that springs to mind), but some stories are better suited to the genre than others. It's not that I think they shouldn't exist, I just don't happen to enjoy them, so I don't watch them. Life is full of things like that, so we just have to do our best to deal with it. :)

Heh, that's a good way to think of her!

I definitely think it's fine for people to like different things, I just think that calling musical numbers unrealistic is like calling a dream sequence unrealistic - it's (usually) not really happening, it's just a representation of what a character's feeling (for example) so I think people can be unfair with musicals in a way that they aren't with stuff like action films, which are also super unrealistic, but they're still great!

I'm exaggerating my opinions a bit for a laugh, but I wish more people gave musicals a chance to just be what they are.

Hey, have you seen the musical "the guy who didn't like musicals" by star kid productions? It's super good
